Saskatoon Industry Education Council (SIEC) Launches Video Promoting Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program (SYIP)

February 27, 2025

The Construction Association of Saskatchewan (CASK) is proud to share the launch of a new video from the Saskatoon Industry Education Council (SIEC) promoting the Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program (SYIP). This initiative, offered through SIEC and the Regina District Industry Education Council (RDIEC), encourages young people to explore rewarding careers in construction while gaining valuable hands-on experience. The SYIP is a 6-week paid internship program that allows students to test out the skilled trades, gaining valuable, hands-on experience that could shape their future careers.

According to BuildForce Canada, nearly 25% (1-in-4) of Saskatchewan’s construction workforce expected to retire over the next decade, the need for a new generation of skilled workers is more urgent than ever. The Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program (SYIP) provides youth with an introduction to various careers in construction, along with mentorship from experienced professionals. The involvement of young workers in the industry is crucial to addressing the risks of a labor shortage and ensuring the continued growth and success of Saskatchewan’s economy.

Shannon Friesen, President & CEO of the Construction Association of Saskatchewan, emphasized the importance of supporting and inspiring the next generation of workers:

“The future of our industry and the prosperity of Saskatchewan depend on our ability to inspire and develop the next generation of skilled workers. These youth are the future of our workforce, and their involvement in programs like the Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program will help us prepare for the challenges ahead. It’s time for our industry to step up and encourage young people to explore the careers that have shaped the successful businesses we have today.”

Call To Action – Pay it Forward

We encourage those receiving this message to “pay it forward” by sharing this opportunity with three other businesses or individuals in their network. By doing so, you will help spread the word and inspire others to take part in shaping the future of Saskatchewan’s workforce.
