Key Takeaways from Saskatchewan’s 2024 Speech from the Throne

November 25, 2024

REGINA (November 25, 2024) – The Construction Association has reviewed the 2024 Speech from the Throne, delivered today by the Government of Saskatchewan, to understand its implications for our industry.

The speech highlights some notable infrastructure investments and plans that will shape the future of our province, reinforcing the government’s commitment to building strong communities and supporting economic growth. However, it also leaves critical challenges unaddressed, particularly those impacting our sector’s workforce.

Key highlights for the construction industry include:

Healthcare Infrastructure: Over the next four years, the government plans to invest more than $2.6 billion into healthcare infrastructure. This includes the opening of additional urgent care centers in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Moose Jaw, and Regina. The delivery of five new hospitals in Prince Albert, Weyburn, Esterhazy, Rosthern, and Yorkton is also a key focus.

Education Projects: Building on the 14 new schools and three major renovations undertaken since 2020, the government has committed to delivering nine more new schools and two additional major renovations, further advancing the province’s educational infrastructure.

Although the throne speech highlights significant infrastructure investments, it does not address one of the most critical challenges facing our industry: workforce shortages. With more than 20% of the construction sector’s most experienced professionals and skilled workers nearing retirement, this looming gap presents a serious issue that cannot be resolved through recruitment alone. The absence of a clear strategy to tackle workforce development leaves a crucial concern unaddressed, posing challenges for our industry’s ability to deliver on these ambitious infrastructure plans.

Nonetheless, we remain optimistic that the government will continue prioritizing infrastructure investment. Our team is committed to advocating for sustained support in this area, ensuring a stable economy where the construction sector can thrive and contribute to building vibrant communities across Saskatchewan.
