Record Capital Spending Overshadowed by Government Retaliation to US Tariffs

March 19, 2025

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan released Budget 2025 – Delivering for You. We are encouraged by the third consecutive record-breaking capital investment; CASK encourages the Government of Saskatchewan to reconsider the recently announced direction on procurement and reporting measures in retaliation to U.S. tariffs.

It is important to signify that over 90% of construction companies in Saskatchewan are small businesses, that do not have readily available capacity for a sudden administrative requirement to report U.S. goods for active projects in addition to procurement competitions. The impact of this policy will seriously harm the cost, time and scope of the projects in Saskatchewan.

We are calling on the Government to work with industry and find solutions that produce true best-value for our taxpayer money while respecting the business interests of Saskatchewan contractors and suppliers. Ensuring that we continue to build the critical public Infrastructure completed on scope, on time and on budget.

“We are pleased to see the continuous record-breaking capital investment in the critical public infrastructure,” said Shannon Friesen – President & CEO “But, we call on government to work towards reducing redundancy and red tape on the retaliatory reporting measures and let our members do what they do best, i.e., to build Saskatchewan.”

We appreciate that Government is working in a complex geopolitical landscape, and recognize our economy is centered around providing our products to the rest of the world, including the U.S. While we are supportive of a Saskatchewan-first approach to protecting our broader provincial interests, CASK reiterates prioritizing a longer-term strategy that does not place a massive reporting burden on our industry.
